Why Is Rabies Almost 100% Fatal After Symptoms Appear?
Rabies has a particularly unusual feature among infectious diseases: before clinical disease develops, it can be effectively prevented through timely and appropriate measures; however, once the virus reaches the central nervous system and clinical symptoms appear, the disease is almost invariably fatal.
What Is Rabies and How Is It Transmitted?
Rabies is one of the oldest known zoonotic diseases and remains an important public health concern in many parts of the world. The disease is almost entirely preventable if appropriate measures are taken before symptoms develop. However, once clinical symptoms appear, rabies is virtually 100% fatal. Understanding how rabies is transmitted is therefore an important step in preventing the disease.
